New Work

I'm super excited since my first illustration I did for The Progressive just hit stands. I've been dying to work with them because I love what they do and they use great illustrators. Here's a sample from the magazine:

click here to see a larger version of the illustration on my blog.

Here's another illustration for them about New Orleans unemployment. This one will be in their next issue.

Finally, these portraits are for a regular gig I've been doing for Time Out Chicago. They're for a column called "The Hot Seat" which features a notable cook from the Chicago area every week. More to come.

Also, good news! For all those interested, The Progressive was able to raise the funds they needed to stay afloat.

Best,

Barry

FUNS WANT Interview

I have a feature interview in the Taiwanese magazine Funs Want Vo. 9. You should check out their very cool website. However unless you can read traditional Chinese you're going to need to use babel fish to translate for you.

For the Cost of Living

I finally finished my sculpture which has taken me forever to complete. I was invited to participate in a group show called "The Cost of Living" at Gallery 5 in Richmond, Va which will include a lot of the local talent around these parts. I've been wanting to work three dimensionally for quite some now, and felt that this was a perfect opportunity to experiment. I admit that I'm not the best photographer so hopefully I'll get some better photos up here soon that don't included backgrounds of my messy bedroom. This is totally new territory for me so let me know what you think. Thanks!

The Cost of Living

Lately I've been working on a sculpture for a show coming up at Gallery 5 in Richmond, Va (Opening on Friday, March 6th). The show is centered around the theme of "The Cost of Living," so I chose to create a bunch of little figures working in this unfinished building/giant king. Essentially it's saying the king's wealth is created by the combined labor of the many. I wanted to try something new with media, since I feel like I've been messing around with pen and ink almost exclusively for the last few years. It's been a lot of fun building this thing and I've learned a lot about working with an added dimension. In this image the piece still isn't complete, but I'll post an update once it's finished.

Best,

Barry

Barry's Art @ Rumors Boutique

Apparently I make hipster art. No, just kidding. For I don't use stencils, like graffiti or draw deer and owls, but my work will be for sale on the walls of Rumors Boutique ("injecting the south with style") at 404 N Harrison St., Richmond, VA. If your unfamiliar with Rumors, it's an independent clothing/music/etc. store that also functions as a Venue for live music. It's a pretty interesting place to say in the least. Anywho, my work will be for sale until early Dec. so come by and check it out. Thanks Casey!

Barry Bruner Snarls

We just finished up Barry's new shirt and posted it in the store. It was the first one we've done in the new t-shirt studio and it turned out great!

Barry's also been very busy with the rest of his illustration. He recently moved back to Richmond and started cranking out the drawings. He has a show at Ghost Print Gallery for the month of September with a few of his fellow Richmond illustrators. He also keeps a current blog and he built and maintains his own website. Barry's quickly become a successful freelance artist and illustrator, recently doing work for The Deal Magazine, Plenty Magazine, Time Out Chicago, The Boston Globe, Richmond Magazine, and many others. Here's a few of his recent illustrations:

Dictators I

Dictators II

Japanese Pharmaceutical Companies invade the US market for The Deal Magazine

Javier Bardem for Inland Empire Weekly

MUGABE with Team Eight Press

BARRY PRINTS

Barry was sweet enough to come down from NYC just to print a poster with us:

"After Spencer and Matt Deans showed up at my door at 2:30 am to crash on my couch, we joked about funny scenarios featuring some of my dictator drawings until some of them actually seemed like a good idea to print. Robert Mugabe was a great choice since he's all over news right now about withholding election results and whatnot. Spencer and I have have been talking about doing something together for awhile, but that's been difficult since I moved to Brooklyn. But when I was in RVA for two weeks in May house/dog sitting, it all worked out.

"I used to screen print a lot in high school doing mainly my band's merchandise, but since then I've lost touch with it even though I still have all my equipment somewhere. But to use a cliche metaphor, it was like "riding a bike." Granted, Spencer did all the exposure stuff, and I just sort of showed up when it came time to drag the ink across the finished screen, but I do think I took a lot away from the experience. The Mugabe print turned out great and I'm looking forward to later in the summer when Spencer and I are tentatively going to print some other stuff. Maybe more dictator posters, maybe some shirts. We'll see what happens. Thanks Spencer!"
